About Hillsville, VA

Historic Hillsville, Virginia is located in Carroll County, in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwestern Virginia, 14 miles north of the North Carolina state line. Hillsville has a land area of 8.95 square miles. I-77 runs just west of Hillsville, intersecting with I-81 ten miles north of the Carroll County line. With direct interstate access in all directions, Hillsville lies within a day’s drive of half the United States’ population.

Public Schools

The Carroll County public school system operates one high school, one middle school, and seven elementary schools. Two of these schools, both secondary, Carroll County High School and Carroll County Middle School, are located within the Town of Hillsville. The new Hillsville Elementary School, constructed in 2005, is located outside of the corporate limits.

While there are no institutions of higher learning in Hillsville or Carroll County, the community is served by Wytheville Community College. This is a two year institution roughly 30-miles north of town. Additional community college facilities within 75 miles of Hillsville include New River Community College in Dublin, Virginia; and Surry Community College in Dobson, North Carolina. Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, consisting of eight colleges and graduate schools, is located in Blacksburg, Virginia, roughly 64 miles northeast of Hillsville.

Additional four-year institutions within a 70-mile radius of Hillsville include Radford University, Wake Forest University, Emory & Henry College, and Bluefield College.
